How To Scratch Building Royal Marine Gaiters

These gaiters are fairly simple to make and give a reasonable representation of the gaiters worn over hikng boots by the Royal Marines in the Falklands War. They use Hot Toys NBC Overboots as the starting point.

Instructions

1. Remove the tie-on soles from the boots and then slip off the fabric covers from the molded inner-boot. The fabric covers are what will be used.

2. Cut the covers on a slight downward diagonal from above the heel to above the toe.

3. Turn up inside the cut edge by about 3mm and sew around to tidy up the bottom.

4. Slightly forward of halfway along one side, attach a buckle attached to a loop of webbing. Make sure the top of the buckle touches the bottom edge of the fabric.

5. On the opposite side of the bottom edge of the gaiter attach approximately 1½inches of thin webbing, suitable for the buckle. This passes under the boot in front of the heel to keep the gaiter in place.

6. Repeat Steps 3, 4 & 5 for the other gaiter but swap the sides that the buckle and strap are attached so that when the pair is finished the buckles sit on the outside of the boot.
